Will the USA Ever Win the World Rugby Sevens Series?

USA Rugby Sevens Star Perry Baker Showing His Intensity

It would be quite a task considering where things began for the USA Sevens Eagles under Mike Friday.  However, given the steady improvement over the years, it is only a matter of time. What are the odds next year anyway? Those that know at says 30-to 1.  One could argue Olympic inclusion helped bolster Perry Baker and the Eagles, had their best overall finish of 5th in the 2016/2017 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series table standings.  The surge of interest in rugby sevens here in the United States is only going to continue.  This a question of ‘when will they?’ verses  ‘will they ever’ honestly. Will it happen next year? If they do, will we be watching it on NBC Gold?  Would the new US-based professional rugby sevens league have an impact on this goal?  What are everyone else’s chances?

Experts on these matters give the Blitzbokke of South Africa 3-to-1 odd to repeat, while they favor the New Zealand Kiwis at 13-to-7 to finish at the top of the table in 2018.  The BlitzBokke’s odds to repeat are interestingly similar to that Lebron James and the Cavaliers to repeat as champions in the NBA Finals against the 2-to-1 favored Golden State Warriors.

There are exciting things on the horizon for the US Eagles Men (and Women)   With the 2018 Sevens World Cup being hosted in San Francisco. In addition, USA Rugby fans found out this past week that a landmark licensing deal of the many large World Rugby events including the Men’s and Women’s Rugby World Cups will be broadcast in the US via NBC Sports. More visibility increases expectations,  so let’s see how it plays out for Team USA.
