Happy 2017 everyone! This is a great time of year for the sports world.  The 6 Nations is coming, HSBC 7s series is back on, Super Bowl LI is this Sunday, and the NBA is heating up.  I can’t help but wonder if the New England Patriot’s Nate Ebner will get another Super Bowl ring this Sunday in Houston.  I’m sure that USA Rugby fans are paying a little more attention since one of their own will be on the big stage again, even if  for the wrong sport. It made me think about 5 athletes I’d love to see on a rugby pitch.  Here I describe: Who, Why I think so and Which Position.  Read on for more:

Lebron James:

Stats:

6’9″ 250 lbs

Position:

#8 or Lock.

Why?:

Extremely powerful, fast, long strides and vision. Long arms also, a great lineout and offloading threat. He is a great decision maker with the ball in hand. King James of the Cleveland Cavaliers would be a site to see on the rugby pitch.

Venus and Serena Williams

Stats:

Venus: 6’1″ 160 lbs.

Serena: 5’9″ 155 lbs.

Position:

Venus and Serena would make a great back row pairing. Venus plays with more length but does not sacrifice any power with her more deliberate style. Serena is more explosive, powerful, and fiery. Serena is a open-side flanker thru and thru, Venus an #8.

Why?

Both are fierce competitors, great footwork, and a balance of speed and power. As professional tennis players, their footwork is among the best in the world, their fitness as well. Venus would be a capable front jumper in the lineouts. In terms of flat out athleticism, Serena is truly elite.  Even in terms of flexibility.

Julio Jones:

Stats:

6’3″ 220lbs, 11.1 secs in the 100m, 40 yd. 4.44 secs

Position:

Center

Speed, Power and Hands. He’d be fearless in the air going for a high ball, and his footwork would shred a defender 1 on 1. Even though he is an NFL Receiver, he’s proven himself among the game’s toughest. The Atlanta Falcons will need him if they are to win Super Bowl LI.  He may even dab on em..

Martellus Bennett:

Stats:

6’6″ 275lbs 40 yd. in 4.6 and bench press max in the mid to upper 300’s, 34 in vertical

Position:

Lock

The New England Patriot‘s Tight End has great hands, fierce in contact, with an eye and hands for finding the ball. Capable runner in the open field. Also he’s Nate Ebner’s teammate, something may have rubbed off.
